So something called the Media Bloggers Association is going to try to bring professionalism to the fine art of blogging by making its members take an online course and prove they're valid journalists. On the Careers Group, some literary agents want an intern.

All you students are going to be pretty bored over the next few weeks, so you may as well try and get some work experience in. Check out the work experience page, or these new shiny one's I've tracked down:

      - Travel/tourism website LondonNet.
      - Charity OpenDemocracy (starts in January).
      - Events website What's On When need interns and freelancers.

And check out the BBC's work experience page here. You might also want to try to get some shifts over the holidays, working cover on those days no one else wants to work, at places like the Mail, listed above.

      . . .

Switched over to the new Blogger Beta thing, so apologies for the random posts in the RSS feed. No idea why that happened, but it did.

Today is my last day of the slack-ass job that allowed me so much time to run this site. I've got lots of time off coming up, but we'll see how things go in mid-January when I start the new job. I might need to work on my time management skills...

On Press Gazette -- so nice to see them back! -- an email marketing agency needs a managing editor. I wouldn't exactly call that "journalism", but I'm just happy to be linking to PG again. This weeks edition is apparently going to reveal how journo jobs are being outsourced to India -- which makes absolutely no sense. How would that work? This sounds -- I hesitate to admit, having not read the story, and being happy about PG's revial -- pretty silly.

Okay, sorry. Back to the jobs.

Another new website is being launched, and it's hunting for freelancers on Craigslist -- but this time, they pay (£25/article).

NatMag's Zest needs a temporary chief subeditor -- tho I find it hard to believe that won't go to an insider. Incisive have a few subediting and reporting positions still up.

The Careers Group has a part-time job at a media website (9/hour).

      . . .

Congrats to Chris, who got a job via this site: "I’ve applied for two jobs from the site and was successful for one which has got me my first real taste of journalism (a screening) and I’m going to do a review for them on Thursday, so I’d just like to say thanks!"

There, Platts is looking for two copy desk editors and Money Management magazine needs an editorial assistant. Financial newswire Bloomberg has advertised about four dozen jobs, in London and across Europe. I'm not going to list them all; just head over to that site and scroll away.

The BBC needs assistant producers for Children's Interactive and a production team assistant for Your Game.

      . . .

And excellent news: Press Gazette's back! Bought out by some group called Wilmington, though it makes you wonder what they were doing last week, eh?

      Journalism Jobs - December 4

On JobsIn, a government council in North London needs a communications officer/editorial assistant (15/hour) for two months, starting... now! So apply quickly.

Dennis' PC Pro is looking for a staff writer. A publisher needs a junior designer/production assistant (22k).

And this would be fun: Al Jazeera is looking for researchers, a news editor and deputy news editors.

NatMag's Harpers Bazaar is looking for a deputy chief subeditor. Financial newswire AFX needs markets reporters and subeditors.

Educational/medical publisher Remedica is looking for an editor, a commissioning editor and an office assistant -- having a biomed degree will help.

Granta -- "the magazine of new writing" -- needs a new editor. Noble House Media in Soho are looking for a subeditor/production assistant.

Estate Agent Foxtons needs a features/copywriter.

      A children's magazine needs an editor (20k).

      . . .

And this is what the New Statesman's Peter Wilby thinks about job hunting at the big papers:

Fleet Street papers don't like advertising vacancies. Editors feel decent journalists will make themselves known without doing anything so mundane as filling out a job application. They have a mystical belief they can sniff out a star by casual encounters at parties or a brisk perusal of the smarter magazines. For senior posts, they pride themselves on "contacts" who tell them who's worth poaching from rival publications... this "informal" (as sociologists call it) mode of recruitment may help explain why growing numbers of journalists seem to come from a closed metropolitan circle.

Any thoughts? I'm pretty sure he's not looked for a job in oh, a million years, but it's true you don't see big papers/publications advertising all that often...

      Journalism Jobs - December 1

      Welcome to December...

Recruiter PFJ has advertised on Total Jobs for a reporter (£26-30k) with a couple of years' experience for some new B2B publication.

On the Guardian, viewlondon.co.uk needs an online subeditor (£21k) -- though, it sounds like you also get to do some writing and comissioning, so more of an all-round role than strictly subbing.

On JobSite, a business travel sector website needs an online editor (25-30k) and someone else needs a proofreader.

I interviewed for that last one; guess I didn't get it...? Oh well, I've got another one lined up (I think).

      On journalism.co.uk, Platt's needs a commodity journalist.

      . . .

Press Gazette may be ressurected -- already? Wow, that was fast. Awesome quote from the administrator, Robert Allen: "I can't say much more because these things are sensitive but today is a new day. And I'm looking forward to it." So optimistic, without saying anything. Ex-PGer Martin is pretty quiet about it on his blog...

Kelly went to the Media Careers Day thing, and wasn't impressed, saying it "was pretty much a waste of time. I mean, if you know about the Guardian jobs website and the BBC jobs website, that's about all that was there that was useful for anyone who wasn't a 16-year-old." Anyone dis/agree?
