      Journalism Jobs - July 31

      On the Guardian job site, River Publishing has looking for several different openings, including a sub editor at Weight Watchers magazine and a picture researcher at the Sunday Times Travel Magazine.

      A few charities hiring today. RNID need a writer and editor (£24-26k). The Royal College of Surgeons of England are looking for an assistant publications and communications officer to work on two quarterly journals, a newsletter and a website (£20- £22k). The LSE needs two indexer/editorial assistants (£19k). And the British Association for Adopting and Fostering need an assistant editor for their website (22k).

      Comic Relief need media relations officers (£28k) and media relations assistants (£18k). The Covent Garden Bureau are hiring an online publishing assistant.

      IPC need a subeditor with a year's experience for Amateur Photographer magazine. Legalease have a job opening for an editorial assistant, and Institutional Investor have one for a financial reporter -- they'll train you in all the markets and finance stuff.

      Press Watch are still looking for media summary writers and analysts (£16-18k).

      On the Careers Group, Africa Investor website has posted a listing looking for an intern (£800/month).

      On Gumtree, a new lifestyle launch (yeah, yet another) needs an assistant to the Fashion Editor (unpaid to start). And Craigs List has a listing advertising for film writers (unpaid) for a website.

      Journalism Jobs - July 28

      According to a story in the Guardian: "Graduates who chose a career in advertising, journalism or the law are more bored with work than contemporaries who opted for banking or accountancy." As many as 50% of graduates in media find their work boring.

      With that said, here's some (hopefully not) boring media jobs...

      On the Guardian, recruiters Reilly are looking for a staff writer with a year's experience for a financial magazine (£22-25k).

      Job of the day comes via Journalism.co.uk from Pira International. They're looking for recent graduates to come work for them on their B2B publications: "Initially we are looking for candidates that can research, interview and write stories from home. The brightest and best news reporters will then join our in-house team of editors when positions arise in the next few months/early 2007." Great opportunity for graduates just finishing their coursework now.

      That job site also has listings for freelance editors and a production journalist for Aspect Media, as well as an assistant editor at a Good Clinical Practice magazine (£23-26k).

      Careers Group has listings for a Russian media intern (must speak the language) for a TV firm, a media research officer for the London Stock Exchange, a subscriptions/database assistant for Globe Business Publishing and work experience in the editorial office of the Royal Society of London.

      Total Jobs has a few. EuroProperty needs three reporters. And Estate Gazette (still?) needs a finance reporter.

      On Press Gazette, Bloomberg is hiring news reporters and editors, in London and elsewhere.

      On Craigs List, something called Audio Snacks is looking for people to make podcasts of walking tours. An online lifestyle magazine needs unpaid freelance writers. Someone needs experienced writers for something about historical sites... it's a bit vague.

      Monster jobs has one from Accountancy Age, looking for a reporter with a year's experience. And something called IP Generation need an entry-level, junior news and features journalist.

      Journalism Jobs - July 27

      On the Guardian jobs site, publishers Elsevier need an assistant editor for an oncology magazine. You'll need a biosci degree and two years' experience for that job.

      Press Gazette have a job opening for a subeditor on a consumer magazine (£21k).

      And they (Press Gazette) get the job of the day today, via a posting from Archant, who are looking for two editors for newspapers based in Richmond and Battersea.

      TotalJobs is advertising for the New Scientist features editor again. And there's a posting for a desktop magazine designer.

      On Holdthefrontpage, CityWire has job openings for reporters and an online editor. And a paper inYorkshire is looking for a trainee reporter.

      Gumtree has an advert for freelance writers for an online luxury magazine. And a new entertainment/events launch has a job for an entertainment editor.

      Business Week is looking for a French-speaking intern for their Paris offices, starting in mid-September.

      A friend of mine saw this on The Office the other day, and I thought I'd pass it along: "It's better to be on the bottom rung of a ladder you want to climb than midway up one you don't want to at all."

      Journalism Jobs - July 26

      On the Guardian job site, book publishers Random House have an opening for a junior designer. The Hansard Society are looking for a researcher for a new media in parliament project (£19-23k).

      Press Gazette have a few new job listings at B2Bs. The first is a subeditor for a finance publication ( up to £28K). Then there's a senior reporter job opening for someone with two years' of experience (24-28k). And last, there's an post for a news editor (£23-28k) for a weekly and a website.

      Journalism.co.uk has several job openings from book publishers Crimson. Based in Richmond, they are looking for an online reporter (18k), editorial assistants and an intern.

      Careers Group has an internship for a television/media firm.

      Holdthefrontpage have a lot of great postings, just not in London. One worth a look is South West News Service, who need trainee features writers in Bristol. Sounds like an awesome first job, if you can bear to leave London. Despite its geography, I'm gonna name it job of the day.

      Recruiters Reilly -- who can't spell -- have a job for an assistant editor in Surrey at a B2B magazine (23k).

      On JobSite, recruiters PFJ are looking for a layout subeditor for a B2B (£26-28k).

      On TotalJobs, Press Watch need media summary writers and analysts.

      At Haymarket, PrintWeek need a senior reporter.

      And BBC need a part time broadcast and online assistant and a senior sub editor and a researcher.

      Journalism Jobs - July 25

      Press Gazette has a job opening at IPC's Nuts for an associate editor. Bit of a senior position tho. And, it's at Nuts. They also need a deputy news editor.

      They also have an ad from Fresh Directions Students Magazine, who need a subeditor for the next three to four weeks (£120/day), which can be today's job of the day, as nothing else is shiny enough.

      JobSite has an advert for a layout subeditor at Insurance Day.

      On the Guardian, Jane's Information Group need a subeditor and an Asia editor. And on Journalism.co.uk, there's a Jane's posting for a reporter, based in Surrey, and a content editor. And if you go straight to the source, Jane's also need an editorial assistant. If you've ever wanted to work for a security/policing/ect publication, this seems a good time.

      Future has advertised for that news writing job for Tech Daily -- requires a year of experience.

      On the Careers Group, something called London Remade are looking for a part-time communications assistant/intern (expenses only).

      Holdthefrontpage has a subediting job for an East London paper, from Newsquest.

      Repeats on Gumtree today, as EMMA online magazine are again looking for writers/researchers/web folks (expenses only) and Soccer International has reposted the freelance job for football writers.

      Craigs List has a posting for a freelance job editing/translating for anyone who can speak Hausa, Twi, Ga or any West African language. And something called Glove Box Guides -- sounds like food/travel reviews -- is looking for an editor and writers.

      And Haymarket needs a subeditor for Planning magazine.

      Journalism Jobs - July 24

      On the Guardian -- it is Monday, after all -- Inspired Selection are looking for an assistant editor for a medical publication. Property Week need a sub.

      B2B firm Ark need a sub/production editor and an editor. Aspect Media are looking for a sub/production journalist. And Euromoney have an opening for a design/production assistant (£23k).

      Instituitonal Investor News needs a reporter; legal/finance experience not required. Chambers and Partners have a job opening for researchers/writers; legal experience useful but not required.

      And if you're looking to get into TV, ZCZ are looking for art history researchers.

      Journalism.co.uk has listings from Future Publishing for TV and film editors for a new website; sounds like it may be based in Bath. Melcrum publishing need an editorial assistant (£17k). And Mining Journal have a job opening for a layout subeditor.

      The Careers Group has a posting from Whats on When for a recent graduate to work as a production assistant (£70/day). Sounds very much like their ads for freelance production staff.

      Holdthefrontpage has a job posting via recruiters TMN for a subeditor (£25-30k).

      And TotalJobs has several, as usual. They have listings for an assistant editor (£17-19k), a senior reporter (£24-28k), a news/web journalist (£20k-21k), a health reporter (£20k), and a news editor (£23-24k).

      JobsIn has openings for a junior editor and a web editor.

      And on Craigs List, a new online women's mag needs writers.

      Job of the day will be exciting to fans of geeky television... it is pretty cool. Titan Publishing are looking for editors for Star Trek, Star Gate and Battlestar Gallactica magazines. Must have knowledge of the shows and year of experience. They also need assistant editors.

      Journalism Jobs - July 22

      Welcome to the special weekend edition... because I had nothing to do today.

      The NCTJ is running a writing contest for jouralism trainees. Topic is the European parliament; prize is £200 and a trip to Brussels; deadline is September 22.

      The NCTJ also have job postings -- who knew? -- although the two openings up there now are for non-London publications.

      According to Holdthefrontpage, Harlow College in Essex offers free NCTJ-accredited journalism training to under-19s.

      Transitions Abroad are running a travel writing competition, offering a prize of $250; entries due September 1st.

      And Bradt Travel guides is doing a travel writing workshop in September.

      Journalism Jobs - July 21

      On the Guardian, recruiter Media Contacts is looking for a news editor for a B2B magazine with three years' experience (£23-24k). Media Network are looking for a layout sub editor for a daily newspaper with three years' experience (£25-30k).

      Journalism.co.uk has updated their job postings. A steel B2B needs journalists, a renewable energy newsletter needs an editor, and an Italian car magazine needs an assistant editor.

      What's on When need a freelance production assistant with full-time work for August/September (£70/day). Fashion Monitor are looking for a researcher/writer with an interest in beauty and fashion (£17k).

      Monster has a job with CNN as an interactive features coordinator, with a few years' experience managing and journalism qualifications.

      Graduate vacancies abound with Careers Group. Okay, there're two and both are from Euromoney and they might be the same. They are advertising a six-month graduate program (£15k) and looking for a graduate trainee reporter (£15k) -- they sound similar, so might be part of the same program.

      EMAP has some interesting "junior" positions available. Zoo needs a junior designer, experience "not essential", and a junior picture assistant. New Civil Engineer are looking for an editorial assistant.

      Job of the Day is from Legal Week, who need an entry-level reporter... which is what this site's all about.

      Journalism Jobs - July 20

      Big wordy, job-filled post today...

      On the Guardian, Nature is looking for a news editor for a new climate change launch. If you're into that sort of thing and want a different position than that one, send in a CV on-spec or keep an eye on their website, as they're gonna need more staff...

      Speaking of Nature, their publisher MacMillan has a few sciency postings up, including an assistant editor for children's books and an editor for a London/science publication. If you want to write about science, MacMillian are always hiring.

      Back to the Guardian, a recruiter is looking for a digital media assistant and B2B Ark need a sub and an editor.

      Estates Gazettes are looking for reporters and subs. This has been advertised before on the Guardian, but the details are all on one shiny (and yellow) page here.

      Journalism.co.uk have a job posting for Bath, but it's good so it's going here anyway: NGamer magazine need a staff writer. "No formal qualifications necessary. Writing talent and knowledge of Nintendo are the main requirements." If you're into Nintendo, this may be your dream job.

      Totaljobs have job postings for an online content editor (two years' experience), a health reporter (first jobber with relevant experience/good freelancing for £20K), and an entry-level assistant directory editor for Haymarket (£14k).

      Jobsite has a listing for an online subeditor (£20k - £22k ).

      Haymarket just posted a whackload (read: lots) of new job openings. They need a sub for a mag called Planning and a news editor for SC magazine. They've reposted the adverts for a news editor for Packaging News and for a reporter with a year's experience for Media Week. And, as always, Stuff want free labour (read: have work experience openings).

      And the amusingly thankless job of the day comes via the MoD, who are looking for a chief speechwriter. Their slogan: "A Force for Good in the World."

      Real job of the day comes courtesy KP Publishing (via the Guardian), who are looking for temporary/short term magazine and book production staff. You'll need Quark/Indesign skills. Good way to get a bit of experience for those of you looking to get into layout/production.

      On the Guardian, Business Hotline Publications need an editorial and production assistant -- sounds like a bit of everything, so a good first job.

      BBC need a researcher for their health and parenting section. Media Types are recruiting an online editor for a travel-related site (25-30k)

      Gumtree has job listings for a business report researcher/writer and an entertainment editor for a website.

      Press Gazette has two job postings, both via recruiter PJF, and both requiring two years' experience. The first is for a reporter (25k); the second is for a senior news reporter at a B2B (23-25k).

      Today's job of the day comes via Gumtree, who have a posting for freelance football writers. If you're into that sort of thing, that's probably pretty cool.

      Journalism Jobs - July 18

      On the Guardian, Brunel University needs a web editor (£25-32k). Sounds like mostly writing as opposed to techy stuff. And new B2B launch Business Insurance Europe needs a news reporter with three years' experience.

      Journalism.co.uk has a posting for a layout subeditor job (£23k), via recruiter Recruit. And Future Publishing has an opening for a creative assistant editor for a cross-stitch magazine.

      Monster has postings from VNU for a journalist correspondent (£20-27k), from Marie Claire for an online editor with at least a year of experience, and from a personal computing magazine for a subeditor (£20-22k).

      On Craigs List, a B2B needs a recent graduate for editing newsletters (14k). They also need freelancer editors. And someone is looking for a freelance proofreader/editor.

      And the Careers Group has a posting for an intern (looks like it's paid) for a science student at an academic publisher.

      Haymarket Publishers have postings for a features writer and a news reporter, both for Horticulture Week and both with 12 months' experience. They also need a magazine assistant.

      Marketing Week need a reporter, euromoney need a researcher/reporter, and a birding magazine need a reporter.

      The Guardian itself has a job as a picture editor, and...

      Job of the Day: The Guardian wants a trainee sports journalist for a 12-month placement.

      Time Out needs freelance subs for the summer and fall... They're also still advertising for editors and interns.

      A new music magazine needs writers. No idea if it pays or not.

      On Press Gazette, News of the World is advertising a graphic arts scholarship, a two-year, paid program, where you'll learn page layout and web design as well as basic news room operations. Deadline is August 11, 2006. And the Press Association is looking for production journalists and a personal finance correspondent.

      The Online Sun has a job opening for a sports journalist.

      JobsIn has a posting for a layout subeditor for an insurance magazine. On JobSite, a tech publisher needs an online reporter with a year's experience (£22k-25k) and a telecoms newsletter needs a reporter with two year's experience (£20-25k).

      On Journalism.co.uk, an electricity trading market newsletter needs an editor with two year's experience.

      Gumtree has a job from something called St James House, who are looking for an editor with three year's experience (£23-28k).

      On Craigs List, a researcher/writer is needed for some automotive study.

      There's a posting for London bloggers (paying for once, $10/3 posts), also on Craigs List. They also need other cities too... Also on CL, Engadget needs bloggers (again, they're paying!) who know a little something about techie stuff and gadgetry. Sounds pretty good.       An IPC web magazine needs a news editor. The Drinks Business are searching for a chief sub (£25k). And recruiter TMN are on the lookout for an elearning editor (£30k) with three years' experience, a tech journalist (£25-30k) based in Surrey, and a telecoms reporter with at least two years' experience (£25-30k).

      Gumtree has adverts for an editor for an international lifestyle magazine and a part time travel writer.

      English Heritage need a guide book editor (22k) with "extensive" publishing experience. And the Wellcome Trust are looking for an editorial assistant with two years' experience (22k). That these two jobs are priced the same blows my mind...

      The Society of Operations Engineers need an editorial and pr coordinator (23k) with two years experience.

      Massive magazine house Dennis Publishing are looking for a subeditor for a computer mag: "Keen interest in technology and proven language skills are more important than previous magazine experience, but knowledge of Adobe InDesign is essential." They also need an editorial assistant for the same publication.

      Charity Save the Children want a part time writer/editor with two years' experience (14k for 17.5 hours a week). They also need a graphic designer.

      Recruiters Recruit Media have an interesting posting for a multimedia journalist/producer for someone with editing/writing/photo skills (25-30k).

      The Publican needs a subeditor/junior designer with layout skills. Property Week are looking for a news correspondent with a year's experience.

      And whatever Websters Multimedia is (something to do with MSN online), it's hiring a tech and gadgets editor, a money editor, a lifestyle editor, an entertainment editor, a weekend homepage editor, a cars editor, and a news editor.

      B2B NewTrade Publishing need a layout sub with a years' experience and a reporter with 18 months' experience for a retail publication.

      And the Guardian itself needs a subeditor for their travel section, with NCTJ and a year of experience. And, they're looking for a sub for a new magazine launch for the fall.

      On the Careers Group -- a site for students/graduates -- there's a ton of internships (mostly unpaid) and jobs. Great source for some work experience. There's an editorial assistant position for a sports journalist, internships (unpaid) at Lycos UK, work experience at some website, a junior financial reporter, a publishing intern for Sally Crawford, and a whole shiny pile of similar positions at book publishers and marketing firms.

      Job Roundup - July 5

      Guardian has a posting for an assistant editor for the International Bar Association, with a year's experience; the IBA also need an editor with three year's experience.

      Recruit Media is looking for a sub with a bit of experience.

      On Journalism.co.uk -- who I just noticed do in fact have an RSS feed for jobs -- have several postings. There're listings for an editorial assistant for a contract publishing firm (£14-15k) and an assistant editor for Mining Journal.

      Gumtree has a posting for a trainee financial reporter.

      Future Publishing needs a TV and film editor.

      EMAP's Zoo needs junior creatives: "Some writing, some editing, lots of ideas!" EMAP also has a few postings for subs (New Woman, Bliss and Heat), and Health Services Journal still need a news reporter and web editor.

      If you're into radio and want to live somewhere with nice weather, Power FM station in Tenerife is looking for trainee presenters.

      On Jobsite, there're postings for an IT reporter (£25k) for a website and a financial reporter (£25k) for a weekly.

      On Gumtree, the Sherlock Holmes Museum has again reposted their ad for a tour guide/publications assistant (£8/hr).

      And on Craigs List, there's a slightly sketchy sounding posting for a fashion/pop culture blog, paying £500 month for a freelance writer.

      Emap need a news editor and features writer (three days a week) for Drapers.

      Nature has a ton of postings for editors and such with biomedical knowledge, as well as an assistant production editor.

      The British Museum is looking for a new media creative editor to write material for their site(£24k). The Scouts need a writer/editor (19k), and the LGA needs a web content editor (27k).

      Recruiters Inspired Selection are searching for an assistant editor for an oncology magazine; you'll need a related science degree. KP Personnell are recruiting a production editor for a weekly.

      If you've ever dreamed of writing for a polymers magazine, it's your lucky day: Crain Communications needs a "young enthusiastic" technical reporter; a second language would help.

      And if you've dreamed of a career stalking famous people, Profile is looking for a celebrity contact researcher (18k).
